OUTREACH local SPECIAL OFFERINGS ... in mission ... * A survey of the community showed that the greatest need was a safe, affordable place for children to be after school until their parents came home from work. Thus was born the Waverly After School Program, offering quality care, programming, and free play for children in kindergarten through grade five. Requests from parents for early morning care and breakfast brought about the addition of a Before School Program. * Mission Awareness Sunday. All ages join together in making soup for a local soup kitchen as well as a variety of projects which serve the community and can be finished in an afternoon. At other times during the year, we undertake single projects. * As members of Wilkinsburg Community Ministry, we support with financial and human resources the work of helping neighbors. One special program of WCM which is dear to our hearts is Teen Moms, which provides quality day care for children so their mothers can complete their education. We supply formula, new clothing for moms and tots, gifts, and baby equipment. * Mexico Mission began when Waverly raised awareness and funds to send a team to Mexico in 2001 to build a house for an indigent, working family through constructores Para Christo. We continue to support the program with people and money, reaping immeasurable benefits derived from having people of limited material resources share their rich faith. This global perspective inspires the reach-out we do closer to home. * We take part in the annual CROP Walk to benefit local food pantries and global hunger programs, support One Great Hour of Sharing, a world-wide mission program, and select a yearly project which the children raise funds for as they learn about mission. * Hearts at Home 2002 is our current mission effort. |
